U.S and China slap tariffs on each other in latest round of escalating trade war

China announced tariffs on $16 billion in U.S. goods after the United States said it would impose the same amount of tariffs on Chinese goods.

The moves, which were expected, represent an ongoing escalation of trade tensions that could soon see tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars of goods.

It's a business opportunity for Canadians that we can't afford to ignore.

An opportunity only in the sense that while a weaker US economy will hurt Canada, China might then buy more from Canada in compensation. It won't make up for it, but it will soften the blow.

Given that Canada's economy is an international light-weight given our small population, I still think we should go the way of unilateral free trade as much as possible and then negotiate trade agreements only on matter pertaining to health and safety standards etc.

What will Trudeau and his girls do if Trump tariffs cars? Tariff more US stuff of course, after all tariffs are a tax and they are not going to turn down an opportunity to hit us with more taxes. But, what are they going to do at the NAFTA bargaining table? What should they do? Scrap the dairy protection? We could probably put up with cheaper cheese to save our auto industry.

Trump has badly mishandled his "Easy to win." trade war. One of the principle things he overlooked was that in a trade war with a dictatorship like China there is no electorate to pressure the government if anything goes wrong. The Chinese know that in the long term (which may be only a couple more years) all they have to do is wait until Trump is gone and then things will return to normal. If Trump had known his history (fat chance of that) he should have known that China responds very poorly to threats. High level negotiation was the best way to go, but Trump thought he could bully the Chinese into accepting his terms and that policy is simply not working out very well.

Trump has decided to impose additional tariffs on $200 billion in Chinese goods in dramatic escalation of trade battle

The announcement of the tariffs, confirmed by two people familiar with the matter, is likely to come at the beginning of the week. It would represent the most significant step taken in the trade war so far, adding to tariffs on about $50 billion in goods that the U.S. and China have slapped on each other, and is likely to draw significant retaliation from the Chinese.

They can either learn to compete or sell.
... or they can wait for their government subsidy cheques like the tooth in'-tootin' free market dairy farmers in the U.S.A. do.

What a crock of shyte. If the free market did every single thing in Canada, the place would look like Mogadishu.

NEWS FLASH! Social Darwinism is dead. Intelligent collaboration put it out of business about eight generations ago.

Trump administration slaps tariffs on roughly $200 billion more in Chinese goods. China has vowed to retaliate against such a move.

President Trump is proceeding with plans to put tariffs on a variety of Chinese products, including everyday consumer goods. The tariffs, which take effect later this month, will be 10 percent until the end of the year, when they will rise to 25 percent.

The action follows earlier import taxes on $50 billion of Chinese goods, most of which went into effect in July.
