I think that if the Democrats don't go Left rather than the center, that a third party will enter the fray.

I'd say that us old buggers have been making a big mess of things for quite sometime. As an outsider looking in, American politics is built on money, lobby, and backscratching.
Trump's "drain the swamp" promise was a pipe dream at best.
