DENVER — A man arrested in the shooting death of a 19-year-old Colorado woman told investigators she hired him to kill her, court records said.
Joseph McDaniel Lopez, 22, said he responded to a Craigslist ad titled “I want to put a hit on myself,” KMGH-TV reported.
Court records say he described how he and Natalie Bollinger exchanged text messages and he picked her up at her apartment in Broomfield, north of Denver, last December. Lopez said he tried to change her mind. They then drove around while discussing how he would be paid. They eventually stopped the car at a spot where he shot her. He said Bollinger provided the gun, which he took along with her purse.
Bollinger was found dead Dec. 29, a day after her boyfriend reported her missing. He also reported his Glock 9mm pistol was gone as well.
An autopsy found she was shot in the head and had a potentially lethal amount of heroin in her system.
Investigators connected Lopez to the case through more than 100 text messages the two exchanged on the night she died.
He was arrested late Thursday.
“Just because we have a suspect in custody, doesn’t mean the investigation is over,” Adams County Sheriff Michael McIntosh said Friday in announcing the arrest.
Lopez told investigators that when they arrived at the spot where Bollinger was shot, she “knelt down on the ground and that he knelt down along her left side and slightly in front of her,” court records said. He said they said a prayer, he got up and closed his eyes and fired the fatal shot. He told officers the gun was still in the trunk of his car.
Investigators did locate a weapon, but McIntosh said it’s too early in the investigation to tie it to Bollinger’s death.
The affidavit does not include any evidence of Lopez’s claims or how much heroin was in Bollinger’s system. The autopsy notes she had a history of heroin and meth use. Investigators say some of her family and friends reported she had a history of suicidal thoughts, but other said she was happy and looking forward to attending school.
Lopez remains jailed. No bond has been set. It wasn’t immediately known if he had an attorney to speak on his behalf.
Craigslist officials did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment on Saturday.

Survivor of deadly bobsled run testifies at fatality inquiry into deaths of two friends

For Danny Spalding, losing two close friends to a tragic and ill-fated bobsled run more than two years ago has been life-altering.
“It just kind of makes you not take any days for granted,” Spalding said Wednesday, shortly after testifying at a fatality inquiry into the deaths of twin brothers Evan and Jordan Caldwell.
“You kind of realize how lucky you are to be alive.”
Spalding told the inquiry he and his group of seven other friends, including the Caldwells, didn’t foresee any danger in taking a ride down the Olympic run on plastic sleds on Feb. 6, 2016.
His confidence was bolstered by the fact he, Evan Caldwell and Caleb Hettinga had made the same runs repeatedly only days before without a problem.
But what no one in the group knew, including the Caldwell twins who had previously worked at Canada Olympic Park, was that staff had locked a barricade in place on the bobsled run where it converged with the luge track.
The barricade was further reinforced by a chain pulled taught across the track to hold it more firmly in place.
The 17-year-old brothers were killed when the separate sleds they were riding crashed into the barricade area.
Spalding narrowly escaped a similar fate when the sled he was on, which went down the track between Evan and Jordan’s rides, crashed, tossing him and his two friends, Eric and Wilson Schultz, from their sled.
He told inquiry counsel Nancy McCurdy he initially didn’t want to call 911 for Wilson, who broke his ankle, because they didn’t want to get in trouble.
But when they learned Hettinga and Mark Lyons, who were on the first sled, were more seriously hurt, he called for emergency services.
Outside court, Spalding told members of the media he didn’t know at that point the Caldwell brothers had been gravely injured.
“I didn’t actually see them till later, maybe a half-hour later (after police arrived),” he said.
In his testimony, Spalding was asked what might have deterred the group from taking such a joyride.
He said warning signs of the potential peril had little effect, suggesting a threat of a fine would have been more compelling.
“We knew we were trespassing,” Spalding told provincial court Judge Margaret Keelaghan.
“If there was a sign just saying if you are caught trespassing there will be a fine of like $2,000, or something like that, then I think that may have made us reconsider,” he said.
The purpose of the hearing is to determine what steps might be taken to prevent similar deaths in the future.
It continues Thursday.

Death of twins on bobsled track was unforeseen, says WinSport head

WinSport president and chief executive officer Barry Heck said he never imagined a group of thrill-seeking teenagers would take a joy ride on the Olympic bobsled run.
Barry Heck, testifying Thursday at the fatality inquiry into the deaths of Evan and Jordan Caldwell, said security and safety has always been the priority for his organization.
“Did you ever consider this track might be an enticement to some thrill-seeking youth?” inquiry counsel Cynthia Hykaway asked Heck.
“No,” Heck said.
“It’s enticing to athletes … that’s what we do, we provide that to them, but in a safe and controlled manner,” he said.
“I did not foresee that the track would be used in that manner.”
The twin 17-year-olds died in the early-morning hours of Feb. 6, 2016, when they and six church friends scaled a fence near the start of the nearly-1.5-km bobsled run armed with three plastic sleds.
The group was unaware the track was blocked by a barricade 491 metres down the hill, designed to cut off the bobsled track when the luge run was in use.
The barricade was also held in place by a metal chain strung across the path of the bobsled run.
Both boys were killed when they crashed into the chain and barrier.
Heck told provincial court Judge Margaret Keelaghan that WinSport is continually looking at ways to improve safety at Canada Olympic Park, which he called “a very special asset for Calgary.”
“We continue to look at not just the track, but everything — what can we do, technical changes,” he said.
But Heck told Hykaway that other than some security improvements already implemented with fencing at sliding track starting points, he could not think of any changes which could prevent similar deaths.
“There’s nothing glaring that pops into mind,” he said. “There’s only so much you can do.”
Meanwhile, the inquiry closed with comments from the dead boys’ parents, Jason and Shauna Caldwell.
Jason Caldwell said they weren’t looking for someone to blame for the tragedy.
“We don’t hold anyone accountable for the loss of our sons,” he said.
And he implored other parents to learn from the incident.
“We raise our kids to love life, we raise them to be creative, to have a spark of life, to pursue adventure,” he said.
Caldwell said things such as GoPro cameras and YouTube encourage kids to “push the limits.”
“The loving thing for us to be doing is to be tempering some of these things in our families,” he said.
“There is an ever-present ability for nephews and nieces, cousins to push things a little too far and that’s what happened on Feb. 6.”
Keelaghan will now file a report on the inquiry making any recommendations she thinks may prevent a similar tragedy in the future.

Jose Ernestor da Silva, 18, was killed when a tiger shark bit off his penis in Brazil. HANDOUT
A beautiful day at the beach turned into every man’s nightmare for a Brazilian teenager.
Jose Ernesto da Silva had his penis ripped off by a shark as he swam with pals over the weekend, according to reports.
Shocked onlookers rushed into the water to assist the terrified young man and pulled him from the ocean.
He died in hospital Monday.
The 18-year-old had been instructed by lifeguards to come closer to shore prior to the attack, Brazilian media reported. Signs warned that deeper water could result in an attack.
GRAPHIC WARNING: Images in the video may be disturbing to some viewers.
“At the exact moment in which the lifeguards asked for them to come closer to the beach, he was bitten,” a fire official said.
The incident occurred on Piedade beach near Recife on the central coast.
Rescuers tried to stem the gushing blood with tourniquets. In a graphic video posted online, the crowd urges da Silva to breath.
En route to hospital, the stricken young man suffered two heart attacks and was listed in critical condition.
Experts believe the predator was likely a tiger shark.

“He would go in secret, because he knew that I thought it was dangerous. I wasn’t worried because I thought he was somewhere around the house,” his mother, Elisangela dos Anjos, told JC Online.
“When I heard about it I went crazy, all the neighbours heard me screaming.”
The stretch of coast is notorious for shark attacks where 80% of the country’s incidents are recorded.
On April 15, Pablo de Melo, 35, had to have a leg and a hand amputated after being attacked by a shark at nearly the same spot.

Louise Benson and Michael Kearns. (Facebook)
Some go to great lengths to get that perfect selfie.
In one case it cost a vacationing couple their lives.
On Tuesday, an Australian man and his British girlfriend were taking selfies along a wall in Ericeria, Portugal when they reportedly fell about 30 metres to their deaths. According to the West Coast Australian, 33-year-old Michael Kearns and 37-year-old Louise Benson were found by a beach cleaner at the bottom of a high embankment in the popular tourist town, situated 35 kilometres north of Lisbon.
According to Portuguese newspaper Correio de Manha, cops investigating the scene found a cell phone near their bodies, noting a selfie might have caused the fatal fall.
Newspaper Journal de Noticias reported fishermen near the beach thought Kearns and Benson were simply sleeping on the beach. But upon approaching them, they described their bodies as “shattered” and a “horror scene”.

Nine News reported Kearns and Benson were in Portugal as part of a five-month vacation when the accidental plunge occurred.
“Everything seems to indicate that the fall happened when they were probably trying to take a selfie,” said Captain Rui Pereira da Terra of the Cascais Port rescue service, as reported by Perth Now. “It seems they dropped their mobile phone and fell down while leaning over to retrieve it.”
Their bodies were taken to a medical centre while Portuguese authorities alerted British and Australian embassies in Lisbon.
Ericeira is a fishing town that’s popular with surfers and tourists alike. According to AFP it’s not the first time tourists have fallen from the wall situated near the Praira dos Pescadores beach.
