The Useful Idiocy of Donald Trump

The problem with Donald Trump is not that he is imbecilic and inept—it is that he has surrendered total power to the oligarchic and military elites. They get what they want. They do what they want. Although the president is a one-man wrecking crew aimed at democratic norms and institutions, although he has turned the United States into a laughingstock around the globe, our national crisis is embodied not in Trump but the corporate state’s now unfettered pillage.
Trump, who has no inclination or ability to govern, has handed the machinery of government over to the bankers, corporate executives, right-wing think tanks, intelligence chiefs and generals. They are eradicating the few regulations and laws that inhibited a naked kleptocracy. They are dynamiting the institutions, including the State Department, that served interests other than corporate profit and are stacking the courts with right-wing, corporate-controlled ideologues. Trump provides the daily entertainment; the elites handle the business of looting, exploiting and destroying.
Once democratic institutions are hollowed out, a process begun before the election of Trump, despotism is inevitable. The press is shackled. Corruption and theft take place on a massive scale. The rights and needs of citizens are irrelevant. Dissent is criminalized. Militarized police monitor, seize and detain Americans without probable cause. The rituals of democracy become farce. This is the road we are traveling. It is a road that leads to internal collapse and tyranny, and we are very far down it.

YOu should write a book, Cliffy. You have the makings there for a good novel. Might require a few foot notes, c/w sources! :) :)

Not sure why.

Clean energy creates more jobs.

Same as laying off Mexican robots and hiring American robots.

Clean energy research and manufacturing now goes to shithole countries like Germany, Japan, Switzerland, Austria, South Korea, France, China and coal's gonna MAGA!! as the US fades away as an industrial leader.

good and insightful post. It appears that most TRumpians don't think that deeply, or grasp the overall negative changes they are so enthusiastically spouting. The contrast between america and Trump USA is increasing all the time.

What was apparent ,but in more subtle shades before.,,,,, is rising to the surface. The Trump gang is not even trying to sugar coat it or make it palatable. Trump USA is IN YOUR FACE......take it or leave it.

Keeping Gitmo open serves more purposes than what Trump is claiming. It is a potential place to disappear undesirables. (as defined by an elite few)

FBI says it has grave concerns about accuracy of memo alleging the bureau overstepped while surveilling Trump campaign operative

The FBI issued its first public statement about the document, saying in part that we have grave concerns about material omissions of fact that fundamentally impact the memos accuracy.

The memo was drafted by the staff of Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), who chairs the House Intelligence Committee.

FBI Director Christopher A. Wray had privately urged the White House not to release the document, and the White House has sent mixed signals on whether it will. The House Intelligence Committee voted along party lines Monday to make the document public, and the president has up to five days to intervene before it is revealed.

China plans for more than 100 new coal-fired power plants this year, even as President Trump vowed to “bring back coal” in America, the contrast seemed to confirm Beijing’s new role as a leader in the fight against climate change.

Chinese firms to build 700 coal plants

These Chinese corporations are building or planning to build more than 700 new coal plants at home and around the world, some in countries that today burn little or no coal, according to tallies compiled by Urgewald, a Berlin-based environmental group. Many of the plants are in China, but by capacity, about a fifth of these new coal power stations are in other countries.

Overall, 1,600 coal plants are planned or under construction in 62 countries, said Urgewald, which uses data from the Global Coal Plant Tracker portal. The new plants would expand the world's coal-fired power capacity by 43 per cent.

Stocks ended a bad week with a sharp drop today. Investors appear to be skittish about rising interest rates after a long market boom.

For much of the last year, the stock market glided higher, lifted by solid economic growth and corporate profits, low interest rates and few signs of inflation.
That smooth ride might now be ending.

I think I mentioned a couple of weeks ago when equities gain more than 10%,its time to start cashing in or switching over to fixed income. Some wise man said "what goes up has to come down" :) :)
