"The most exciting aspect of this new annealing process is the unlimited size of the crystals that can be treated," said study team member Ho-kwang Mao. "The breakthrough will allow us to push to kilocarat diamonds of high optical quality."

The Hope Diamond is a mere 45.52 carats.

Great innovation,

I am sure if the price is far lower than the real clear carat as this will be good quality as well, it will drive many diamond miners to starvation in Africa and other places as they already many of them are starving wile working for PEANUTS a month.

As well for such high quality man made diamonds will also increase the level of fraud, Jewelers selling man made for real to ignorant vulnerable buyers, especially older people.

Obvious question,
for best clarity and most cuts How much $$$$ per carat?

Nothing made by man can ever equal what comes from the mantle. As for price, diamonds are pretty much worthless if it weren't for DeBeers having a monopoly. Viable Kimberlite pipes are being found in massive amounts over the past 20 years thanks to the digital revolution in exploration.

The African miners don't starve by any means. Those who turn to combing the beaches of Sierra Leone and other nations are already destitute and are searching for pop bottles just as much as they are for diamond roughs.

The man made are great for industrial or optics but they don't have the soul of a natural stone. There is far more to a gemstone or any mantle born mineral than aesthetics. They have properties that just can't be explained or go beyond the realm of the mind.

Heretofore, artificial, or man-made diamonds have been limited to industrial stones used in a number of industries for cutting and machining. The diamonds in the OP are good enough for gem stones and apparently the size is not limited to a few carats. Diamond is crystalized carbon, the hardest substance known to man. Soul is not a factor.

An extremely good topic.
As someone who narrowly avoided the 'Great Sask diamond stock scam' Science rules..

De Beers is 'organized worldwide fraud'. If we want to aid african miners- build sustainable processing cultures.
