The photos of his severed finger tip are pretty graphic. You can understand why doctors said he'd lost it for good. Today though, you wouldn't know it. Mr Spievak, who is 69 years old, shows off his finger, and it's all there, tissue, nerves, nail, skin, even his finger print.
There is a video at the link as well, this is truly remarkable. I seem to recall seeing a show on immortality on The Nature of Things a few years ago and they touched on stuff like this.

I think this is The Nature of Things episode that covered this, unfortunately, it is just a trailer and some text but if you ever get a chance to watch it you will be stunned at just how close some of this stuff is.
