Wow - awesome event. Reminds me of the 1935 movie, "Last Days of Pompeii": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Days_of_Pompeii_(1935_film)

When Vesuvius erupts again, It will be far, far worse than what hit Pompeii. Napoli is a city of a million people and an explosive eruption like the one that destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum would have an effect similar to that of an hydrogen bomb with, probably, hundreds of thousands of casuslties. Some day , it will happen.

Etna, in Sicily, is by far the largest of Italy's three active volcanoes - two and a half times the height of the next largest, Vesuvius. Only Spain's Mount Teide in Tenerife is larger in Europe and North Africa.

The name "Etna" comes from the Phoenician words attuna meaning "furnace" or "chimney".
