Scientists have discovered a salt water “Jacuzzi of Despair” at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico that kills anything that swims into it.
The nearly four-metre-deep, 30-metre-wide pit off the coast of New Orleans has a salt concentration so high that it sucks oxygen from the water and kills crabs, fish and other wildlife who fall in, reports the U.K. Sun.
The body of water is more than 1,000 metres below the surface of the Gulf of Mexico and is "one of the most amazing things in the deep sea," according to Temple University's Erik Cordes, who was among the scientists who made the discovery.
"You go down into the bottom of the ocean and you are looking at a lake or a river flowing," he told Seeker.com. "It feels like you are not on this world."
