A mutant lamb that carried a jellyfish gene that would make its skin transparent for organ research mistakenly ended up as dinner for someone.
Scientists at the National Institute for Agronomic Research (INRA) in Paris made the embarrassing confession this week to Le Parisien newspaper.
And they said it was not an accident. Tossing the genetically modified lamb with other normal lambs headed to market was a malicious act prompted by a dispute over research, INRA president Benoît Malpaux told the paper.
The lamb -- named Rubis -- was sent off to the abattoir in November.
It was modified as part of a program called "Green Sheep" that set out to create lambs with a gene known as "green fluorescent protein" that would ultimately make their skins transparent to help scientists study heart transplants.
Officials have launched an investigation, but assured the public there is no danger to whoever might have ended up with Rubis for a meal.
