A baby born inside his amniotic sac was such a rare sight, the doctor at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles took a picture before removing the baby from the bubble.
One in 80,000 babies are born "en caul," the medical term for being born inside the amniotic sac.
Silas Johnson was delivered via C-section on Dec. 6, the hospital says. He was born premature at 26 weeks.
Dr. William Binder, a neonatologist at the hospital, told CBS Los Angeles he quickly took the photo before working to remove the baby from the sac -- the baby was still getting oxygen from the placenta.
"It felt like slow motion but really realistically probably about 10 seconds that we had to sort of quickly pause and be able to do this," he told CBS.
Silas' mom didn't know how her son was born until hours later when she was shown the photo.
"It was definitely like a clear film where you could definitely make out his head and his hair. He was kind of in a fetal position and you could see like his arms and his legs curled up," Chelsea Phillips told the station.
Phillips and Silas are now at home and doing well after spending about two months in the hospital.
