Australia's record 2013 heat 'virtually impossible' without climate change, says report

Tuesday, February 10, 2015, 8:52 AM - If you're looking for irrefutable proof of the effects of global warming and climate change, a new report points directly at the record heat Australians suffered through in 2013.

This new report, penned by the Climate Council of Australia, examined the extreme heat waves across Australia during 2013. A report from its predecessor, the (now scrapped) Australian Climate Commission, already labelled the 2012/2013 summer season as the 'Angry Summer', highlighting the 123 records that were broken in just 90 days. The Climate Council's new Quantifying the impact of climate change on extreme heat in Australia report now examines the entire year of 2013, and using 'ground-breaking scientific research' performed last year, it is able to actually quantify how much each broken temperature record or extreme heat wave during that year was influenced by climate change.

"The evidence on the link between climate change and extreme heat is stronger than ever, and in fact is overwhelming," the report says, going as far as to say that the 'record hot year of 2013 in Australia was virtually impossible without climate change."

report show that record hot days have increased dramatically, doubling in number since 1960, and that they are happening far more frequently than record cold days. Also, heat waves experienced in Australia these days are occurring more frequently, they're starting earlier than ever before, and reaching greater extremes in both temperatures and duration.

Where this leads to does all this lead? The inescapable conclusion that action is necessary.

"The case for action is just as overwhelming," the report's authors state. "Carbon emissions will need to be reduced rapidly and deeply, with most of the world’s economies essentially decarbonized by the middle of the century, if the climate system is to be stabilized and the worst of extreme heat in the second half of the century is to be avoided."

Although 2013 was the focus of this report, it's quite likely that we'll be seeing similar declarations about 2014. The year already topped the charts of ever major meteorological organization around the world, as the hottest on record (or tied for the hottest on record). Across Australia, summer conditions were - again - particularly brutal, with even more records broken than during the previous 'Angry Summer'.

But the evidence linking extreme cold is ignored altogether when in fact one is the absence of the other. The evidence for climate change and extremes is the fact that this presstitute skates arround.

I noticed a distinct lack of proposals to keep the economy going after decarbonizing the world. Where will the money come from to feed all the people that no longer have jobs? More important how will we get food products to the cities? Think all the unemployed could become porters and carry fresh veggies from California to Regina?

What a crock. Anyone noticed North America is in one of coldest, wettest winters in decades. Oh, my mistake. We are to ignore ALL data that does NOT support AGW.

Only a fool would believe in Anthropogenic Global Warming after the tactics of its proponents PROVE it has nothing to do with Science.

It is a philosophical and political agenda that has abandoned all pretense of conforming to the scientific method. It must be accepted on the basis of credulity of its priesthood as a article of faith.

NEW CLIMATE CHANGE PROJECTIONS FOR AUSTRALIA

CSIRO and the Bureau of Meteorology have released climate change projections for Australia that provide updated national and regional information on how the climate may change to the end of the 21st century.

The projections are the most comprehensive ever released for Australia and have been prepared with an emphasis on informing impact assessment and planning in the natural resource management sector. Material has been drawn from observations and from simulations based on up to 40 global climate models and four scenarios of greenhouse gas and aerosol emissions during the 21st century.

The 2015 projections provide greater levels of detail and confidence compared to previous projections. Findings are consistent with previous projections research and analysis for Australia, and incorporate an increased knowledge base.

The new climate change projections for Australia are funded by the Department of the Environment through the NRM Planning for Climate Change Fund with co-funding from CSIRO and the Bureau of Meteorology.

Key findings

Overarching findings

Australia’s climate has already changed.

It has become hotter since 1910, with warming across Australia of 0.9°C
Rainfall has increased in northern Australia since the 1970s and decreased in south-east and south-west Australia
More of Australia’s rain has come from heavy falls and there has been more extreme fire weather in southern and eastern Australia since the 1970s.
Sea levels have risen by approximately 20cm since 1900.
Projections for Australia’s future climate vary regionally and depend on which of the four greenhouse gas and aerosol emissions scenarios is considered. Overarching findings include:

Australia’s average temperature will increase and we will experience more heat extremes and fewer cold extremes.
Extreme rainfall events that lead to flooding are likely to become more intense.
The number of tropical cyclones is projected to decrease but they may be more intense and reach further south.
Southern and eastern Australia is projected to experience harsher fire weather.
Sea levels will continue to rise throughout the 21st century and beyond.
Oceans around Australia will warm and become more acidic.
Additional findings

Temperature

Australian average temperature has increased by 0.9° C since 1910.
We have seen more hot days and less cold days.
Temperatures will continue to increase over the 21st century.
The extent of those increases will depend on global emissions of greenhouse gases and aerosols.
By late in the century (2090), Australian average temperature is projected to increase by 0.6 to 1.7°C for a low emission scenario, or 2.8 to 5.1°C under a high emission scenario.
Hot days are projected to occur more frequently while there will be fewer frost days.
Rainfall

Winter and spring rainfall in southern Australia is projected to decline while changes in other areas are uncertain.
For the rest of Australia, natural climate variability will predominate over rainfall trends caused by increasing greenhouse gases until 2030. By 2090, a winter rainfall decrease is expected in eastern Australia.
Overall, extreme rain events are projected to become more intense.
This finding is consistent across Australia even in areas where average rainfall is projected to decrease or the average direction of change is uncertain. This is largely due to the ability of a warmer atmosphere to hold more water.
However, the projected reduction in average rainfall in south-west Western Australia may be so strong as to weaken this extreme rainfall tendency.
Drought

The time in drought will increase over southern Australia, with a greater frequency of severe droughts.
The time in drought and the frequency of extreme droughts may increase elsewhere in Australia.
A projected increase in evaporation rates will contribute to a reduction in soil moisture across Australia.
Tropical cyclones

Tropical cyclones may occur less often; however they will likely be more intense.
Snow

There will be a decrease in snowfall, an increase in snowmelt and thus reduced snow cover.
Fire Weather

Southern and eastern Australia are projected to experience harsher fire weather, including an increase in the number of days with a ‘severe’ fire danger rating.
Projections for fire weather in northern Australia and inland areas are less certain.
Sea level rise

Sea levels will continue to rise throughout the 21st century and beyond.
Projections of sea level rise for the Australian coastline by late in the century (2090) are comparable to, or slightly larger than, the projected global mean sea level rise of up to 82 cm under a high emission scenario.
A collapse in the marine based sectors of the Antarctic ice sheet could make sea level rise projections several tenths of a metre higher by late in the century.

You don't get it, do you bud.... All of the 'projections' to date by the various ecotard lobbies have fallen flat on their respective faces.... Forwarding yet another 'projection' does more to harm your agenda than it does to support it

Yep Capt. Nailed it again.

And: Why do people need "an agenda"? Is their life that terrible they have to "be told"? Are they that freakin stupid ?

Eg. Right now my driveway is plugged with snow and the goddam plow just made another pass...........which is good once I get out of said
driveway. So my "agenda" should be that climate change has probably frigged up Wed. for an hour or two. Well dog gam, eh.

Climate change is ongoing. If we're in for another ice age, my grand kids grand kids, kids might feel the effect. Me. Not so much.

Years ago we had so much snow round here it wasn't safe to go ice fishing. Couple locals drowned trying. Too much snow on the ice prevents it from freezing well as everyone (except the drowned guys) knew.

And the summers ! By Jesus they were so hot snakes piled rocks upon rocks to make a cool place to sit it out. My religious aunt said it was god's punishment.........(meaning her tomatoes were pooched).........She never did say why god was punishing her. Probably for sexual thoughts, which were, well, ungodly.
Still, she had 5 kids, so some of those thoughts were borne to fruition as it were.

But if we're in the throes of drastic climate change, it would appear the average dumfukk can't do too much about it. May as well fasten the seat belt and enjoy the ride...........go skatin.........or swimmin........whatever.......drink beer on the beech....or go to church and pray the great conibula sanctorum will not kick YOUR nuts. It's a fact - prayer will help ya . an, if you kick in a buck or two, you can get a timmies and and a double chocolate to go. See. Life's good.

just sayin.

Thanks for the chuckles Nuggs! You have a signature style of writing and telling a tale that makes me chuckle... Now, I'll have to refrain from sipping my coffee when I start into one of your posts... Cost of new keyboards is getting prohibitive

In terms of agendas, you're dead right, we all have one or more... With this in mind, most normal folk do not take such extraordinary steps to force their position onto their neighbours.... Not so long ago, it was the JWs that were the only ones that walked that path.... I still close the door on that group, not any differently than I do with this issue

The next "just you wait" projection :Pause Over Within 10 Years Says NASA's Schmidt

Why do we have to wait for the next solar cycle if the sun plays no role in climate change?
