Newborn dies after contracting herpes from a kiss

Doctors in Australia say a newborn's death may have been caused by herpes she contracted after being kissed by someone with a cold sore.
Baby Eloise Lampton was born healthy on Nov. 1 in Mackay, Queensland, but days later returned to hospital and was put on life support after being diagnosed with the herpes simplex virus, ABC Australia reports. She died Nov. 25.
In rare cases, a baby can develop the herpes infection during the birthing process, or it can be passed on after delivery through contact with someone who has an active cold sore, according to Prof. Cheryl Jones, who spoke to ABC.
Mother Sarah Pugh wants her devastating experience to serve as a warning to other parents.
"Make sure you are washing your hands and taking care with your personal hygiene — it is a must around little kids," she told the news site.
