A notoriously camera shy and terrifying-looking deep-sea anglerfish has been captured on video in its natural habitat for the first time.
The female “black sea devil” was recorded Nov. 17 by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute approximately 580 metres below the ocean surface using a remote-controlled undersea robot.
Video shows the creature in all of its spooky glory, including large fangs and luminous lure projecting from the fish’s face. The lure is used to attract prey in dark, deep waters. Only females have lures.
A broken tooth can even be seen lining the anglerfish’s mouth.
Watch the video for more details.
