A 36-year-old woman who received a womb transplant earlier this year has given birth to a healthy baby boy, The Lancet reported Friday.
The Lancet is the world's leading general medical journal.
The baby is thought to have been born in Sweden within the last month. In January, doctors there transplanted wombs into nine women who were either born without uteruses or had them removed because of cervical cancer.
The paper says the donated womb came from a 61-year-old family friend who had gone through menopause seven years before the surgery.
It is understood that the mother is a patient of Dr. Mats Brännström, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Gothenburg.
Brännström told The Lancet: “Our success is based on more than 10 years of intensive animal research and surgical training by our team and opens up the possibility of treating many young females worldwide that suffer from uterine infertility.
``What is more, we have demonstrated the feasibility of live-donor uterus transplantation, even from a postmenopausal donor.”
