The NT Government has ordered an internal investigation after trees at a sacred Aboriginal site were felled by a government-commissioned contractor.
The trees, which stood either side of the Coomalie Creek crossing on Batchelor Road in Darwin's rural area, were cut back earlier this month.
But local Country Liberals member for Daly Gary Higgins said contractors had overstepped the mark, describing the work as "murderous trimming".
In a statement, the Department Of Infrastructure said the work "highly likely represents a breach" of the Northern Territory Aboriginal Sacred Sites Act.
It also said it was carrying out an assessment of the work performed against the contract.
Photos of the trees - taken before and after the tree lopping - were sent to the ABC by a local resident and posted on the 105.7 ABC Darwin Facebook page.
