A Texas man, 61, suffers from a rare condition where his body brews booze in his stomach, a medical journal says.
The man baffled doctors after he showed up at an emergency room wicked drunk in 2010 and claimed he hadn't a drop of liquor.
"He would get drunk out of the blue — on a Sunday morning after being at church, or really, just anytime," said Barabara Cordell, the dean of nursing at Panola College in Carthage, Texas, NPR reported.
Doctors found the man's blood-alcohol volume to be .37% — nearly five times the state's legal limit, according to a recent case study published in the International Journal of Clinical Medicine.
Doctors initially thought he might be a closet drinker, but he was later diagnosed with so-called auto-brewery syndrome — where his stomach ferments any carbohydrates he eats, such as bagels, pasta, and pop, and turns it into ethanol.
The man was treated with anti-fungal medication and put on a strict no-carb, no-sugar diet.
Only a handful of people around the world have been reported to have the unusual condition, the study said.

oh my god, poor guy! Can you imagine ending up at .37, let alone ending up that drunk without knowing why? You'd think you were dying.

I seem to recall a kid in Cardston that was diagnosed with something similar a few years back. He was considered learning disabled until they discovered the problem and changed his diet.

Interestingly (or not), this is just what yeast cells do--convert sugar and starches to alcohol in oxygen-deficient environments (like in a beer keg or a human stomach). Humans have an extra enzyme that further breaks down the ethanol to lactic acid (which burns, which is why you get that burning sensation when working out your muscles).
