There's a viable alternative to today's use of gas and diesel in cars and trucks in NH3 better known as ammonia. Widely used in fertilizer and other industrial processes ammonia is piped, shipped, stored and used on a large scale already. This system could be expanded to replace gas and diesel used in internal combustion engines in a few decades.

NH3 Car

The energy needed to convert nitrogen from the atmosphere and water into NH3 can come from solar, wind and other power sources, especially nuclear power. Molten salt reactors of various designs could completely replace fossil fuels giving millenia of dependable power production, including fast and thermal neutron designs.
