We keep being told over and over that there is no viable alternative to fossil fuels to power our society.

Solar doesn't do it, it just has about 26% capacity the same for wind and tidal.

Biomass doesn't do it, it needs too much land and resources to effectively replace coal, oil and gas.

The same for geothermal, it's not available in some places where the Earth's crust is too thick and the mantle's warmth too far down.

Nuclear doesn't cut it, it's too expensive to build and too dangerous to run. Thorium LFTR does present one option there:

So what are the options?

I guess if your intent is to not only find a replacement for fossil fuels, but one that allows a virtual monoploy on the most important sector of our economy then you need to find just one alternative to convert to. So the real issue becomes not about sustainable energy alternatives, it becomes- how can the tiny minority of people who already enjoy wealth, comfort and priviledge on a level the vast majority of us never will maintain that standard.

The obvious solution to the energy crisis isn't finding an alternative to fossil fuels, it's about finding an alternative to an energy based economic monoploy. It's about using all the different options in suitable combinations that fit the local conditions.

Alternative energy is about energy independence and that's the real reason there's so much resistance from above.

There are a lot of different options to fossil fuels, the real challenge is getting them in place in the face of determined resistance. You can read here and other places how the only agenda of the "green" energy movement is profit. I find that debatable, but if so how does that make it any different than the fossil fuels sector. And there somehow seems to be this standard that renewables can't have any impact on the environment to be feasable, massive amounts of damage are being done every day worldwide in the extraction, shipping processing and consumption of fossil fuel products and that's somehow OK.

Alternative energy somehow needs to be perfect to be acceptable but what we have now can be as dirty and environmentally destructive as it wants because it has cheerleaders with very powerfully amplified voices. They don't have to make any sense, they just use volume and repetition.

Instead of constantly demanding that we find a new square peg to put into the square hole of energy production, how about modifying it so it matches the sources we know are sustainable and abundant. Instead of demanding that we possibly give up any hope of a future so that the current- and highly unbalanced- model is preserved, let's let the political processes that are supposed to be there for our interests actually work.

Buffett Buys World's Largest Solar Project for $2.5 Billion

Warren Buffett's MidAmerican utility, which is part of his holding company Berkshire Hathaway, has just announced that it's buying SunPower's Antelope Valley Solar Projects, located in California. The tag price is between 2 and 2.5 billion dollars! At a total of 579 megawatts, the Antelope Valley projects are the world's largest photovoltaic solar development, and SunPower will retain the 3-year contract to build it.
