Blister-causing beetle found in packaged salads: CFIA

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is investigating reports of a blister-causing beetle found in pre-packaged salads.
The iron cross blister beetle has a bright red head and bright yellow wings separated by a black "cross." It can secrete an irritating chemical called cantharidin that cause blisters if touched, the CFIA said.
It's not uncommon for fresh produce to carry insects - even critters that can harm people - but finding this particular creature is rare, the agency said.
The CFIA did not specify which brand or brands of salad were affected, saying only the product was "imported leafy vegetables."
The CFIA is advising consumers to inspect and wash the produce carefully and not to touch or crush any beetles they find but remove them and call the CFIA.
There have been no confirmed cases of illness or injury associated with the products, the agency said.
