SAINT-GEORGES-DE-BEAUCE, Que. — A 10-month-old boy suffered second- and third-degree burns after his parents left him at a daycare centre in Saint-Georges-De-Beauce.
"When we took him to the emergency room, he was screaming so hard he was shaking," Stephanie Drouin, the boy's mother, said. "It was really hard to see."
On Dec. 20, Drouin had taken her son Dylan to the daycare before heading to work. That afternoon, she got a phone call that "left (her) speechless."
"They told me that my son's skin had come off," she said. "The teacher told me that she was pouring milk into his bottle. He was sitting on the counter, playing with his pacifier and he moved. He touched hot water and burnt himself."
Drouin rushed to the daycare to get Dylan, where she was met by the teacher and owner.
"She was crying and apologizing. They told me it was an unfortunate accident. All I wanted was to take Dylan to the hospital."
The family rushed to the hospital, where Dylan was admitted.
"He was crying and screaming so much. I was told it was second-degree burns on his left forearm, hand and food. On Monday "¦ we went to see specialists, and they said that some of them were actually third-degree burns."
It's not yet clear what effects his injuries will have on Dylan's development.
"He had begun to crawl," said Drouin. "I was told that he would need occupational therapy and physiotherapy. He'll surely be scarred by the burns. He has started to sleep through the night again, but sometimes he wakes up screaming so loud, he loses his voice."
Drouin has contacted the provincial minister for families and hasn't ruled out pressing charges.
"The counter is not a place for a child," she said. "It's a big lapse in judgment and it's negligent."
The owners of the daycare could not be reached for comment
