MONTREAL - A man who disfigured his ex-girlfriend by dousing her with acid was sentenced Tuesday to four-and-a-half years in prison.
However, with time already served, Nikolas Stefanatos has just 16 months left behind bars for his attack on Tanya St-Arnaud in August 2012.
A judge agreed to a common sentencing recommendation of 57 months for aggravated assault.
Stefanatos admitted last year to pouring concrete-cleaning acid on St-Arnauld following an argument at their apartment in the Montreal suburb of Longueuil, Que.
St-Arnauld, a hairdresser, suffered third-degree burns to her arms and chest, and lost most of her hair.
She was in an artificial coma and has had several skin grafts.
The Crown underlined several aggravating factors in the case, including the domestic violence element and the fact "there were major consequences for the victim."
The defence claimed the couple was throwing different products at each other and that Stefanatos was also injured.
