Possibly Moving to Saskatoon (Moving To Saskatoon)

My family and I are considering a move to Saskatoon and would like to chat with people who have lived in both Saskatoon and Calgary to "compare" neighbourhoods.

We figure the easiest way to decide which neighbourhoods to look at in Saskatoon is to compare based on where we would chose to live in Calgary.

Thanks!

In Saskatoon, you'd want to live in either the north part of the city, or east of the river. Nutana is nice, but a little pricey. I'd stay away from the west side.

Unless you like that sort of thing, I don't know.

Well, we live in the far SW part of Calgary, near Spruce Meadows. We want to avoid any place like Forest Lawn, Dover, Rundle, Whitehorn (well pretty much the entire NE). If is is east of Deerfoot Trail, we would not live there.

Any suggestions based on that?

Would you raise children in Saskatoon? Do you know anything about the schools there? Extracirricular activities?

Thanks!

If possible, pick Regina instead. It's a much nicer city in my opinion.

I'm not familiar enough with Calgary to make the comparison of neighborhoods in Saskatoon.

However, the newer areas are in the north of the city, as well as on the eastern edges. The eastern neighborhoods feel more suburban. If you don't want that, the area with the most character is definitely Nutana. Schools are good there, however, its near the river, downtown, and the University, thus its one of the more expensive areas. However, if you sell your house in Calgary, you'll have no problem affording the area.

Generally, Saskatoon's schools are pretty good. I'd avoid the west side, though, if you can afford to. Not anything necessarily wrong with the area, but its a tougher place. If I were in Saskatoon, I wouldn't live there.

Saskatoon has more of a rural feel than Calgary. Its the nicest and most dynamic city in Saskatchewan, and you are a couple hours from the northern lakes. There's nowhere near as much to do there as there is in Calgary though.

The economy is doing well. However, longer-term, there's a problem in that the population is aging, the non-taxpaying population is rising, and the debt is high. Plus, its the birthplace of Canadian socialism. Thus taxes are high and will remain high. But that might suit your fancy, I don't know.

Oh, and I'd disagree with Tanakar. I grew up in Saskatchewan and have lived in both Regina and Saskatoon, and I liked Saskatoon much better.

But that's just my opinion.

Really? I didn't grow up there, but I lived for three years in Saskatoon and four years in Regina, and I just liked Regina much better.,To each his own!

I lived in Saskatoon for three months. It was boring, but we went to the circus. That's all I remember. That and the big radio tower close to where my father and his girlfriend played bingo. Calgary was way better. Like totally.
