A pregnant Regina woman with severe pain in her right hand was sent home without treatment from a hospital ER, but returned the next day and learned it might need to be amputated, her family says.
Earlier this month, Sheila Bolen says she took her daughter Krystal Schwan to Pasqua Hospital after she slammed a door on her hand. Bolen says staff took X-rays but discharged her daughter because they thought she was on drugs or drunk.
"This is inconsiderate practice to someone who was in a lot of pain and not giving her the time of day because she was being treated like she was on drugs and choose not to help her make her feel comfortable in any way (sic)," Bolen wrote on Facebook.
The following day, Schwan's hand had turned black and they returned to the hospital. Doctors diagnosed her with compartment syndrome and a bacterial infection that may require the amputation of her hand.
Schwan was transferred to another hospital in Regina and has remained there for the past three weeks to undergo skin grafts for her severely blistered and black hand. Doctors also made an incision from her palm to arm pit to drain the fluids.
Regina Qu-Appelle Health Region has been contacted for comment.
Krystal Schwan's infected hand will need to be amputated. The pregnant Regina woman went to the Pasqua ER when she had pain in her hand after slamming a door on her hand, but she says she was turned away without treatment because staff thought she was intoxicated. She returned to hospital and was told it must be amputated. (Postmedia Network/Sheila Bolen)
