A good night's sleep came at a high cost for two-by-four-wielding thug Curtis Severeight.
Severeight was sentenced to two years in jail Friday for beating a man and woman who laid claim to his bunk bed. "We are talking about a dispute over who gets to sleep in a bunk bed ... a case of abhorrent violence committed over a trivial thing," Crown attorney Mitchell Lavitt told Judge Dale Schille.
Severeight, 20, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault.
Severeight was sleeping in a top bunk bed at a Redwood Avenue home last July when he was awakened by a woman who said the bed was hers. Court heard the woman and her male partner lived on the street but frequently stayed at the home.
Severeight "was not pleased about the situation and armed himself with a two-to-three foot long two-by-four and then struck her," Lavitt said.
The woman fled the room and returned a short time later with her partner. An argument ensued and Severeight beat the man to the floor with the two-by-four, breaking both his arms.
"In the midst of the assault, Mr. Severeight stopped striking (the victim) and basically made him an offer that if he kissed his shoes he would end the assault," Lavitt said.
The man complied, only to be assaulted again.
The victims fled the home and were treated in hospital for their injuries.
Defence lawyer Jody Ostapiw argued the attack was less serious than other aggravated assaults involving knives where the difference of an inch can mean a manslaughter charge. "At the end of the day, it's a few broken bones," she said.
Severeight's sentence is on top of 197 days already served and is to be followed by three years supervised probation.
