The emotions come into being through stimuli, through the nerves. You put a pin into me, I'll jump; you flatter me and I am delighted; you insult me and I don’t like it. Through our senses emotions come into being. And most of us function through our emotion of pleasure; that,s a fact You like to be recognized as a Jew. Then you belong to a group, to a community, to a tradition, however old; and you like that, with the Jewish Scriptures , and the old traditions, mountain high. And the Christian likes his and so on. Our emotions have come into being through stimuli, through environment, and so on. I think that's obvious.
What roles have emotions in life? Are emotions life? You understand? Is pleasure love? Is desire love? If emotion is love, there is something that changes all the time. Right? But you all know that, ?What,s your point of view ?

Perhaps it's my English,5F . I think one has to realize that emotions, sentiment, enthusiasm, the feeling of being good, and all that have nothing whatsoever to do with real affection, compassion. All sentiment, emotions have to do with thought and therefore lead to pleasure and pain , they change, thought changes. Love has no pain, no sorrow, because it is not the outcome of pleasure or desire ,Love Is .

Yes, I know about that side of it, but knowing about it doesn't make it any easier to deal with, or provide any useful guidance.

well china, the first thing that came to mind after reading your opinion was,
what would it be like 'without' any of those emotions.

We would be no different than any piece of machinery we have invented, eat,
move, sleep, but then how would we multiply, that emotion must stay intact
or else we dissapear.;-)
The emotions are what drive us, curiosity in my opinion would be the first, that
must be an emotion in itself, and drove us to where we are today, good or bad,
it is better than sitting in a cave trying to stay warm.

2 things drive people in life; thought and emotion.
No, emotions are not life. Some life has emotions. They rest we don't know about but are certain some cannot have emotions.
Understand what?
Pleasure is not love but it can breed love.
Desire is not love but it, too, can breed love.
Emotion isn't necessarily love. Love is an emotion, but there are many emotions; sadness, joy, love, anger, hate, anxiety, etc.
This is grade school science stuff.

Whether you are guided by your emotions or guided by your intellect, it leads to despair because it leads nowhere. But you realize that love is not pleasure, love is not desire. What is pleasure ? When you look at something or when you have a feeling, to think about that feeling, to dwell constantly upon that feeling gives you pleasure, and that pleasure you want and you repeat that pleasure over and over again. When a man is very ambitious or a little ambitious, that gives him pleasure. When a man is seeking power, position, prestige in the name of the country, in the name of an idea, and all the rest of it, that gives him pleasure. He has no love at all, and therefore he creates mischief in the world. He brings about war within and without. So one has to realize that emotions, sentiment, enthusiasm, the feeling of being good, and all that have nothing whatsoever to do with real affection, compassion, Love .But obviously that 's only a point of view.

I have to disagree, I have not been led to dispare, nor have I been led to nowhere. My emotions, and what intellect I do have,,, has led me down a different path. One of happiness, and prosperity.

If that were your experience your life would be pretty dismal, and it plainly is not. You know that statement is not true. You want to see some real existential despair, read Sartre.

Love has no pain, no sorrow,

You've got to be single. And if you're not, I pity your wife, you have no idea what the two of you are engaged in.

Dexter, reminds me of something my Muslim friend once told me. We were chatting over a pint of beer. He sang a couplet in Urdu; I didn’t understand a word of it, of course. But then he explained it to me.

When Allah saw my pain, my hurt, he told me that the effective medicine on pain is love. But when I asked him what is the remedy for the pain caused by love, he became quiet.

I am sure it probably lost something in translation, but I think the meaning is clear.

Your Muslim friend drinks beer, Sir J.?! Lake of fire for him...

You come across as an intelligent man, Dexter, I am sure you know that stereotypes are just that, stereotypes. Sure, some people meet the stereotype, but many don’t.

So yes, I have Muslim friend who drinks beer (I don’t think he would sing without a pint of beer inside him). Anybody who does not drink beer is no friend of mine. I have another Muslim friend, he is a school teacher. His wife is a principal at school, she earns more than him.

So we should be careful about stereotyping people. As to the Lake of Fire, probably that is where I am headed as well. Maybe he and I could get together in the Lake of Fire, have a pint and shoot breeze there.

That makes me very happy Mrj; it comes to show that I,m not always correct .But as I have stated at the end of my post ( the part you did not print) the post is only my point of view .By the way Mrj ,please tell me more about the happiness and prosperity you have acquired with the help of your emotions .(lottto 649)?.

I don't think stereotyping was behind this comment. Muslims are not supposed to drink alcohol.... " Sigh"... I am sure your Muslim friend is a good man, with a wonderful family. Alas Muslims are not supposed to drink beer.
