“How do you gain freedom? How do you become free?”

You don’t. If you are at all interested in freedom, you observe very carefully those things which are free. People aren’t free, so you can’t learn about freedom from people. From people you can only learn about relationship together, about fears, worries, pre-occupations, anxieties, etc. So what do you observe if you want to learn about freedom? Not yourself, obviously. You are not free. What will you do if this question really matters to you? If it doesn’t really matter to you, I know what you again will do - you will respond to me through the prison bars .

It depends on how you define freedom. No creature is entirely free, even the biggest, strongest, domanant creature still has to protect its territory from others that would take it, kill and eat its young and lay waste to its feeding grounds. Creatures, and people, who live by the law of the jungle are anything but free. In our case freedom comes from the rule of law and respect for it. Sensible laws, agreed upon and enforced fairly, without arbitrary discrimination for or against individuals and groups, with justice meted out likewise is the path to freedom.

Unfortunately far too many are willing to embrace security in lieu of freedom, (and some even think they are one in the same). We see nonsensical laws, discriminatory justice applied arbitrarily championed by people who demand their, or others' "rights". Like the right to be protected by the state, and the state is all too willing to comply, because you are then beholden to the state. Freedom requires duty and vigilance; security requires compliance and servitude.

We, in this country are free, but don't seem to recognize it, and don't seem enjoy it,
but we have no clue what it is 'not' to be free, as many others experience, in
other parts of the world.

We are born free, and we are free, unless we decide not to be, or put ourselves
in a position where we think we aren't.
Don't go to jail, don't get buried in debt, don't stay in a non-free relationship,
just be free, even in a relationship, one should still feel free, it is your own
decision, it is between the ears, it is happiness, contentment, awareness,
satisfaction, put material things in second place, work with pride, hug and
love your family.
Keep free of advertising and politics.
A natural and easy way to live in freedom.

If you think you would like to be free than you obviously think you are not. If you think freedom is something to be attained, you obviously don't understand what freedom is. If you think you can attain freedom through some action you don't know what freedom is.

True freedom can only come from being unattached to anything or anybody, to not care what others think of you, to not have any desire or need. In a society where those things are socially conditioned by care givers, teachers, religious leaders and politicians, then we are all slaves to the beliefs systems of our peers. Tricky business freedom. If you want it, you can't have it. The only way to have it is to not want it.

“I think it is important to understand that freedom is at the beginning and not at the end. We think freedom is something to be achieved, that liberation is an ideal state of mind to be gradually attained through time, through various practices; but to me, this is a totally wrong approach. Freedom is not to be achieved; liberation is not a thing to be gained. Freedom, or liberation, is that state of mind which is essential for the discovery of any truth, any reality; therefore, it cannot be an ideal; it must exist right from the beginning. Without freedom at the beginning, there can be no moments of direct understanding because all thinking is then limited, conditioned. If your mind is tethered to any conclusion, to any experience, to any form of knowledge or belief, it is not free; and such a mind cannot possibly perceive what is truth.”
The free mind never asks how, but is always discovering, moving, living.

Yes, you are born free, so just stay that way, it is a state of mind, and a natural
reality of being alive, but much easier for one who doesn't have to live among
the masses in modern times, as the ability to be free will be challenged all the time, but one can sail through that without blinking, in a 'true' free state of mind.
Nothing will penetrate freedom, or push it away.
