WTF! No religion in publicly funded schools.................

A heated debate over religion in schools saw one person thrown from a meeting at the Peel District School Board (PDSB) on Tuesday.

A revised operational procedure, allowing Muslim students to use their own sermons during Friday prayers, was received by trustees — sparking debate.

While the Muslim community applauded the decision, many other community members said religion has no place in schools.

The Peel school board brought forth a new procedure in the fall requiring Muslim students to choose from six pre-written sermons during their Friday prayers — meaning students could only use sermons approved by the board.

The Peel Board said this was to create consistency across its schools.

However, students said it violated their right to religious freedom.

“It’s easier to relate to another student, another peer, who can speak to the circumstances of other students who are of the same age and of the same context,” one student explained. “That’s far more inspiring to students who are listening than someone who may be older and not understanding the same context as a teenager lives in, in regular life.”

So the Peel Board reversed its decision, allowing Muslim students to once again write their own sermons, and presented it to trustees on Tuesday. But not before several community members voiced their concerns about accommodating religion in schools.

“The reason why I would strongly object to this is, by nature, Canada is a diverse country and there are different ethic groups that are here,” Krishna Kavoori, whose five-year-old child is in the Peel District School Board, explained. “If each one of us keeps asking for time to pray during the school day – there’s only five learning days – it’s going to be difficult.”

The meeting got so heated that one community member speaking out against religious accommodations in schools, was ejected for causing a disruption.

The disruption halted the meeting for about 15 minutes, but was quickly reconvened.

No religion in a publicly funded anything. If you need to pray in a "special place", build yourself that special place and pray there. We will not interfere with your right to pray in your special places if you do not interfere with our right to singularly secular public places.

Any form of religious education or prayer in public schools is either allowed or not allowed. Which is it?
One religious group cannot be given special privilege over another.
This is an outrage!
The Catholics have their own school system for religious reason. The Jews have their own school system for religious reason. If the Muslims want religion in schools, let them fund their own system too.

They already do have their own schools , but they want more control over all schools their children attend .

But every one is beautiful don't you know . But I am more beautiful than you .

They already do. There is one at the corner of Trafalgar Road and Burnhamthorpe.

In Ontario, the Catholic schools are now publicly funded and have been for a long time now. I didn't like it then and I like it even less now because it has set a precedent for other religious schools to be publicly funded. The taxpayer already publicly funds their religious institutions by taking up the fiscal slack on tax-free properties that religious buildings sit upon.

Our publicly funded schools are supposed to be for actual education, not used as ideological indoctrination centres for politics or religion.

All private schools in BC receive government funding.

God's enemy dislikes the religion of course; I don't encourage teaching the religion of the idolatry or the enthusiasm; but teaching the general rules in a country like Canada is good;

E.g. teaching the Ten Commandments which are agreed upon by all the heavenly religions.

The first and the most important of all the commandments pertains to God's glorifying and praising.
The second is to respect and honor the parents.
The third: Do not kill
then do not steal
Then do not lie in your witness or testimony ...etc.
These are excellent teachings.

In addition, God's religion in general enjoins the good morale and the good manners ... in spite of the shouting and lies of the enemies of God: the atheists, the enthusiastics and the evil-livers: the indecent and corrupt people who want to live in ungodly way: of course they dislike the religion of God.

Soon the religious folks will demand self indoctrination sights.
Seriously religion is something that should not be in schools,
but yes as someone suggested the theory of religion is alright
in a history class. We open ourselves to which religion if we go
down that road to them all would take all day

Brampton Mayor Linda Jeffrey wrote a letter Thursday supporting recent changes to the way Muslim students are allowed to pray in public schools and challenged the “misinformation and hateful speech” of some who questioned the local school board’s decision.

In January, the Peel District School Board lifted its restriction on what prayers were used by its Muslim students during Friday prayers.

They are now allowed to pick their own prayers and sermons rather than pick from six selections pre-approved by the school board.

At the Jan. 14 meeting where the change was approved, several speakers came forward to question why Muslim students were allowed to pray in public schools at all.

Head of Canadian Hindu Advocacy Ron Banerjee told trustees that allowing students to pick their own prayers to be used during school time “may violate Canadian values,” and later referred to Islam as a “poison.”

Another man, Kevin Johnston, who runs a website called the Freedom Report, wrote on YouTube after the meeting that the PDSB had “once again committed treason by allowing Muslims to infiltrate Peel region public schools and spread their message of hate and death.”

“Canada First,” a group opposed to the school board’s decision, is planning a “Walk to Oppose Religion in Schools” for this Saturday morning at Celebration Square near Square One in Mississauga.

The group says it also opposes Motion 103, a non-binding motion tabled in the House of Commons by Mississauga MP Iqra Khalid that denounces Islamophobia but has drawn criticism from conservatives who say it places too much emphasis on Islam and unfairly excludes adherents of other faiths from proper recognition

Well maybe when another religious group surpasses Canada 38.7% Catholics population, they can replace the cross on the Catholic schools. The constitution protects Catholic schools, I think overturning it might be difficult.
