TORONTO - Dog walker Cole Courneya keeps a sharp eye on the ground these days when strolling through downtown parks after finding razor blades strewn about.
Courneya “didn’t really think much of it” when she initially spotted a couple razor blades while walking clients’ pooches along Iceboat Terrace, east of Bathurst St. and Fort York Blvd., last Thursday.
But after discovering another six blades scattered within gravel patches in nearby June Callwood Park, she became concerned.
“That’s when I thought maybe something kind of weird was going on,” Courneya said Tuesday as she walked Frank, a Boston Frenchie, and Quinn, a goldendoodle, through the park just west of Bathurst St.
June Callwood Park has no playground, so it’s not a popular spot for kids. But a steady stream of dog owners from the surrounding condos walk their pets there, even though it’s mostly concrete with an array of gravel and garden patches.
And many of those pet owners clearly don’t stoop and scoop because the park is littered with countless piles of dog poop.
“It’s a glorified litter box,” Courneya said.
She said the feces as been an issue for area residents, so it’s possible someone scattered the razor blades in an effort to hurt dogs as they scratch in the gravel after doing their business.
“But hopefully that’s not the case,” added Courneya, who reported her concerns about the razor blades to Toronto Police.
Officers are investigating and say razor blades were also found recently in Lisgar Park., near Dufferin St. and Queen St. W.
“Investigators are collecting surveillance video and evidence from the razor blades that have been found,” Const. Jenifferjit Sidhu said.
If caught, the culprit would likely face mischief charges, she said, adding no injuries have been reported and advising the public to not touch the razor blades.
