Three bison are dead and the Toronto Zoo wants to know why.
Zoo staff discovered the dead wood bison, two females and one male, in a holding area near the animals’ outdoor exhibit on Friday. The area where the animals were found is not accessible to the public.
“The three bison have been sent to the University of Guelph for a post-mortem,” the zoo said late Friday in a statement, adding officials are reviewing what happened in the time leading up to the deaths.
The zoo has been involved in wood bison conservation since the 1970s, including working with a research network across Canada that has developed assisted reproduction systems for the threatened species.
