Mammo targets Black Lives Matter award

Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti says he hopes to find a way to keep Black Lives Matter — Toronto from receiving a city award.

Mammoliti has placed a procedural hold on an item on the city council agenda this week which would see councillors endorse and congratulate the controversial group for receiving the William P. Hubbard Award.

The citation is given to an individual or group which makes a significant contribution toward a positive race relation’s climate in Toronto.

“This group has done nothing but stir it up,” Mammoliti said. “It has not been a positive race relations climate with this group.”

Mammoliti placed the hold on the item in hopes of finding a “mechanism to reject it,” he said.

“I don’t believe that this group deserves it. More importantly, they’re going after our police department. I’m not going to be supporting this award to go a group that wants to pick a fight with the police.”

Black Lives Matter — Toronto did not respond to request for comment.
