TORONTO - Zeus the dog is in the fight of his life.

“It’s just an absolute horrible sight,” Barbara Steinhoff, executive director of the Toronto Humane Society told the Toronto Sun.

On June 10, Zeus, a small seven-year-old dog was delivered to the humane society from their colleagues at the Toronto Veterinary Emergency Hospital with serious injuries.

The dog was found with chemical burns on his head and eyes, cavities in his mouth and chest, kidney damage and severe rib and pelvic fractures, among other injuries.

The society alleges someone intentionally caused these injuries.

Steinhoff says this is the worst case of cruelty they’ve ever seen.

“When you look to see the injuries on this dog, all veterinarians have been saying these look like neglect and abuse,” she said. “It’s terrible.”

A spokesperson for the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals told the Sun they’re investigating the case.

Zeus has been receiving five different kinds of eye drops daily due to the burns in his eyes. Doctors confirmed he can still see despite the damage, and Steinhoff added he was just recently able to stand for the first time.

The dog is not in a stable enough condition for surgery, and moving forward, the humane society wants to get him in the best shape possible to receive that.

The society estimates the surgery to repair his fractured pelvis will cost anywhere between $3,000 to $5,000, and his ICU care bill came to over $2,000.

“He’s going to need extensive care for the next little while,” she said, “He needs a lot of care right now.”

The society set up a donation page, asking the public to help get Zeus the care he needs and has surpassed its goal of $10,000.

Steinhoff said she is hoping Zeus will get back to the condition he deserves to be in.

“He is a tiny little thing and is the sweetest thing,” she said. “After everything he’s clearly been through, he is affectionate and sweet and absolutely adorable.”
