Ottawa Humane Society is asking for the public's help after a kitten was tossed out of a pickup truck window onto a highway.

Witnesses saw a silver pickup truck driving on Colonial Rd. toward Frank Kenny Rd. near Navan, which stopped to throw a kitten from a front passenger window Saturday around 2 p.m., according to Natalie Pona, a spokeswoman for the OHS.

The driver was reportedly a man in a baseball cap, Pona said.

The seven-month-old female kitten, who was named "Sweetie," was brought into OHS by the witnesses.

She has a badly broken tail and a bloodied face and is currently recovering in the critical care unit at the OHS, Pona said.

Vets aren't sure how her tail was broken but it likely didn't happen in the fall. Her tail will be amputated this week.

The kitten is also being treated for an upper respiratory infection.

Despite her injuries, Sweetie is "eating and purring," Pona said.

Pona said Sweetie will eventually be adopted out to a new home but there's a "long way to go" before her complete recovery.

Anyone with more information about this case is asked to call OHS Rescue and Investigation Services investigators at 613-725-3166 ext. 224.
