TORONTO - The warning sign beside the Tim Hortons washroom is very clear: “...please use our washrooms MAXIMUM ONLY 2 MINUTES.”

Disobey and “someone will knock on the door.”

The Sun threw caution to the wind Wednesday and tested the controversial two-minute limit at the Timmies near Queen’s Quay West and Rees St.

Two minutes, three minutes, four minutes ... the rebellion stopwatch passed five minutes before Sun photographer Jack Boland was finally busted.

But it wasn’t management with a knock on the door. It was an impatient customer aggressively jiggling the door handle.

Shakti, 30, a regular customer who declined to give his last name, said people have knocked on the door when he’s been in the bathroom, but it’s always customers, never management.

“Everybody goes into the washroom and have different paces of doing their business. In a way, it’s not fair, but at the same time it’s the establishment’s decision to make,” he said.

Keshav Randev, 17, said the time limit should be increased to four minutes. “What if someone has a bladder problem?”

A female employee who appeared to be finishing her shift saw the ladies’ room was occupied, looked over her shoulder, walked into the men’s room and closed the door.

She was inside for less than two minutes while two men waited outside to use the facilities.

One of them walked into the ladies’ room when it became vacant.

An employee at the bike shop next door suggested the purpose of the sign might be to deter homeless people from sleeping in the washrooms.

Tim Hortons didn’t respond to repeated requests for comment.
