TORONTO - An eight-week-old kitten used up at least one of his nine lives after most likely being thrown out of a car in Burlington and surviving.
Furiosa had his front right leg amputated but just over two weeks later, he’s almost ready to go to a new home.
A man discovered Furiosa’s motionless body on Cedar Springs Rd. on June 1. Animal control officials picked the cat up and transferred it to the Burlington Humane Society for more intensive care two days later.
“The vast majority of his body was severely bruised. His chin was degloved, which means the skin and fur had been torn away from his chin,” said Adrienne Maranduik, with the humane society. She said that since his leg was so mangled, they had to operate and remove it.
Staff went to work on June 4 in a challenging attempt to save tiny Furiosa.
“It (was) a difficult surgery because he is so little, both in age and in size. But he did do extremely well,” Maranduik said.
Furiosa, who was named by the humane society’s veterinarian after the Mad Max movie character who lost an arm, recovered quickly and started displaying energy within a matter of hours. Maranduik said the humane society will take care of the orange and white kitten for another week to ensure his wounds have properly healed.
She said this is the first time she has seen a case of this severity in four years at the humane society.
“You see a lot of different things, but nothing like this,” she said.
After hearing about Furiosa’s case, the humane society’s insurance provider extended coverage for a year.
Maranduik added that the organization typically sees two or three animals annually that require intensive care, but the number is low given they take in around 700 animals.
While he may now hop around with one front leg, Furiosa still has a sense of curiosity and adventure.
“He’s a kitten, so his demeanour is to play and to have fun and to explore,” Maranduik said. She added that “with no leg ... (the animals) just kind of adapt and move on.”
Furiosa was put up for adoption on June 11 and the humane society received around 25 applications shortly after the posting on Facebook. Staff shortlisted the applicants to 10 people, who then had to undergo an interview. They plan to make a final decision on Furiosa’s new home soon.

Allegedly thrown from a car.

It's that time of year again eh? Every June/July Humane Society always finds a cat that has had some horrendous made for TV mishap and the donations start pouring in during their otherwise lowest donation months.

How much have they raised on Go F--- Me?
