OWEN SOUND, Ont. -- A 17-year-old boy has been charged with cruelty to an animal in the killing of a cat that was found stuffed in a duffle bag in a garbage can in an east-side park last month.
The boy walked into the city police station with his parents on Saturday "and admitted to killing the cat," Sgt. Sandra Green said in a news release.
Police issued a news release May 23 stating that an indoor cat was inadvertently let out of a family home.
The family searched the area for the grey, short-haired cat and eventually found it dead in a garbage can in a park in the area.
On Sunday, police said their appeal for information resulted in a witness coming forward.
The person gave officers a description of a male who was seen carrying a black duffle bag near the house.
The same person was later seen leaving the area of the park without the duffle bag, the release said.
"In their media release from the 23rd of May, the police did not mention the body of the cat had been found in a duffle bag. The investigating officer was able to follow up on that information and identify a possible suspect; the young male who turned himself into police."
Police are not providing any additional information "except to say the general cat population was not in danger."
The youth charged Saturday was released to his parents on several conditions, one of which is not to have care or control of an animal or bird.
