OTTAWA — Daniel Kennedy dangled the bunny by its ears from his 10th-floor balcony for a few seconds before he let go as an eight-year-old girl watched in horror.
He was irritated, a judge said Friday, because the girl and her parents had shown up with a new kitten.
Usually the neighbours were welcome in Kennedy’s home, but as his defence lawyer pointed out, the habitual drinker has a “Jekyll and Hyde-like personality.”
So Kennedy, 57, greeted the Sept. 29, 2013, intrusion with a threat to pitch the grey and white rabbit into the air.
“If you don’t believe me, just watch,” he said.
Then he reached into its cage and proceeded to prove rabbits — unlike cats — do not have nine lives.
“This was a callous and cruel act committed in the presence of known animal-lovers,” Judge Diane Lahaie said.
“They were happy and wanted to share their joy with you. You certainly put an end to that.”
She gave Kennedy nine months in jail and two years of probation.
