OTTAWA — A motorcyclist is recovering from a bloody ordeal after his bike split a deer in half on Hwy. 417 Thursday morning.
Paramedic spokesman Steven Lew said the man is extremely lucky. Not only did he survive the crash, but off-duty paramedic Ian Courville saw what happened on his way to work.
The collision occurred around 5:45 a.m. in the westbound lanes.
Lew said the motorcycle “literally cut the deer in half” and the animal died instantly.
The rider slid 150 m down the highway and suffered a “pretty significant” leg injury.
His injuries aren’t life-threatening. Lew said the rider is also fortunate there wasn’t much traffic at the time.
“He was lucky none of the passing cars hit him,” Lew said. “He was covered in deer blood.”
Courville stopped and tended to the man and called 911. He waited with the injured rider until crews arrived.
The 46-year-old was taken to the trauma centre at the Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus.
