A Hamilton man has been sentenced to life in prison for an attack in which he stabbed his friend 68 times and left him to die on the side of the Red Hill Valley Parkway.

Drew Reid, who was 18 at the time of the murder, won't be eligible for parole for at least 18 years, Justice Kim Carpenter-Gunn ruled when handing down her sentence on March 13.

Reid killed Dustin Padvaiskas during a dispute on a Red Hill Valley trail on a dark Sunday evening in November 2011.

Reid, now 21, pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of his friend last May. There was an unusual 10-month delay in sentencing because of a dispute that arose over the agreed facts that were put to the court as part of his plea.

He wasn't employed or in school when the murder occurred but was involved in drugs and other petty crimes, court heard, although he didn't have a criminal record.

Assistant Crown attorney Katherine Livingstone had asked for an 18-year sentence, saying Reid had a history of violence dating back to his childhood and was continuing to find trouble in jail.

"Mr. Reid has had a propensity for violence starting, unfortunately, from Grade 1," said Livingstone, "up until the present, where he is involved in altercations in jail."

Livingstone also urged Justice Carpenter-Gunn to factor in the brutality of the murder and the fact he had discussed the possibility of killing Padvaiskas prior to the crime.

She also noted that Reid carried a knife of about 15 to 18 centimetres with him to meet Padvaiskas.
"Sixty-eight times that Mr. Reid connected with Mr. Padvaiskas's body," she said. "Nine of which were potentially fatal."

Livingstone argued Reid killed Padvaiskas "for the sheer thrill of it. There is no other explanation."

Reid has also not taken his prescribed medication nor sought any type of help while in jail, Livingstone said.

Defence lawyer Charles Spettigue told the court "trust issues" have affected Reid's desire to seek help.

Padvaiskas, who grew up in Beamsville, had moved to Hamilton shortly before he was killed and was attending classes at the St. Charles Adult and Continuing Education Centre.

Motorists reported seeing two men — one of them bloodied — on the side of the Red Hill Valley Parkway at around 10 p.m. Padvaiskas had been trying to flag down cars for help after the initial attack by Reid.

Court heard Reid left Padvaiskas after his initial attack, but realized his victim was still alive and went back and attacked him again.

Reid waited as Padvaiskas tried to flag down passing cars. His body wasn't found until several hours later, when morning commuters spotted him in the median.

The good news is he'll only be in his late 30s when he gets out. Plenty of time to kill more folks. The other good news is it'll only cost y'all about two million loonies to keep this worthless POS locked up for 18 years.
