THOROLD, Ont. -- A Port Colborne, Ont., man was rescued after falling down a nine-metre-deep hole while out geocaching with his wife and son on Sunday.
The Thorold and St. Catharines, Ont., fire departments, along with police and paramedics initiated the rescue operation at the Lakeview Cemetery area about noon when the 47-year-old man became trapped in the narrow hole.
He was reportedly walking in an area of an old Seaway wall with his family when he fell into the hole east of the Welland Canal while geocaching, an outdoor treasure-hunting game using GPS-enabled devices.
He was reportedly conscious but suffering a knee injury from the fall, but walked away from the scene after being hauled to the surface.
The difficult rescue operation required a tough, snow-clogged hike of about two kilometres and there were concerns about more holes beneath the snow in that area.
