KINGSTON, Ont. -- A Canadian man was en route to Texas Tuesday to pick up his three-year-old grandson after the boy's mother was killed in an apparent murder-suicide on Sunday.
Dawn (Larson) Giffa, 28, of Kingston, moved to Killeen, Texas, a year ago when her husband, a U.S. soldier, was posted to Fort Hood.
Donny Larson will bring little Keoni back to Kingston.
Giffa's friend Shelly Gordon has set up a GoFundMe campaign to help raise money for the family.
"I'm just trying to get the word out as much as possible," Gordon said. "The grandparents are going to take care of Keoni now and they're going to need all the help they can get."
Giffa, described as an animal lover, also left behind three dogs, two rabbits and a goldfish, Gordon said.
Friends have been able to collect Giffa's dogs from the Killeen pound, and one of them - Champ - is also being brought to Kingston.
"I'm so thrilled that they got Champ because (for Keoni), that's his connection now," Gordon said.
Giffa's two other dogs and other animals are being adopted by friends in Texas.
Police in Killeen said they responded to a 911 disturbance call on Sunday night after gunfire erupted at a home. When they arrived, they found several gunshot victims and were told the suspect had fled with his wife to his own home nearby.
Shortly afterward, shots were heard from inside his home, police said. Inside, officers found a man and a woman dead with gunshot wounds.
Police identified the deceased suspect as Atase Giffa, a 30-year-old Fort Hood soldier.
In addition to Dawn Giffa, 31-year-old Lydia Farina and 40-year-old Larry Guzman were killed.
Killeen police are calling the shooting domestic related and confirmed that they had been called to the Giffa residence a couple of weeks before.
"Three (people) were shot and killed and then the shooter shot and killed himself," police spokeswoman Carroll Smith said. "One (other) victim is still alive."
The surviving 41-year-old female victim, who has not been identified, was upgraded Tuesday from critical to serious condition.
