Toronto has been ranked the best city to live in the world by the Economist. The ranking aggregates Toronto's performance across a range of indexes, which include safety, livability and cost of living. National level rankings like the Economist's Democracy and Global Food Security Index were also factored into the overall rank.

The overall rankings come as part of a new survey from the Economist Intelligence Unit that ranks cities based on how safe they are. According to this report, Toronto is the safest city in North America and eighth-ranked city in the world, trailing Tokyo, Singapore, Osaka, Stockholm, Amsterdam, Sydney, and Zurich. The safety index is ranked according to the following criteria: digital security, health security, infrastructure and personal safety.

In the overall rankings (what the Economist calls the "index of indexes") Toronto has only one category in which it doesn't rank in the top 10 globally. Can you guess what it is? Yep, cost of living. In this category, our city comes in 70th place. That's not really surprising, and for what it's worth, most of the other cities in the top 10 of the overall rankings are deemed to be more expensive than Toronto.

The Economist has also supported liberal causes on social issues such as recognition of gay marriages,[34] legalisation of drugs,[35] criticizes the U.S. tax model in a recent issue,[36] and seems to support some government regulation on health issues, such as smoking in public,[37] as well as bans on spanking children.[38] The Economist consistently favours guest worker programs, parental choice of school, and amnesties[39] and once published an "obituary" of God.[40] The Economist also has a long record of supporting gun control.[41]

while it's not a place I would personally want to live, I can see why people would choose to do so

I am more comfortable with a small community that has easy access to TO...I can be downtown TO in just over an hour...then your biggest worry is where to park and the cost of the parking

It's not shocking that the usual suspects are eating sour grapes.

The Alberta driven oil economy is falling apart.

Eating sour grapes about what? They included Toronto and Montreal in their North American cities, that's it. They didn't look at ST. Johns, Vancouver, Calgary, Regina, Edmonton, Yellow KNife, White Horse, just to name Canadian cities.

Vancouver is really safe if you can outrun the begging crackheads.

They compared it to large cities around the world.
I would rather live in a smaller city, as I do, but as large cities go Toronto is a really good one.

Not even close. Never will be as bad as the socialists did to Ontario manufacturing.

The socialists sent our manufacturing to China? Give your stagnated retired out of touch head a shake.
Socialists did not effect manufacturing any fukking place in Canada or North America.
Money grubbing conservatives, like Sam Walton, looking to make an extra dollar from cheaper labour
is the source of the decline of manufacturing on this continent.

This joint is pretty cool...if you're looking or acting for for trouble you can find it just as you could in Portage la Prairie, Olds or Cranbrook.

It's basically a little united nations of people, most of whom go about their business. Happens to be a lot of stuff to see and do in a city this size but there is no need to worry about walking down the street unless you have no common sense.

Maybe our he-men would rather swagger around vancouver's east side or the north end of winnipeg.

At any rate, beats living in st. louis..

I was in Toronto a couple years ago. Most of the visit around Younge St. I felt very safe. It was obvious that the drug problem around there wasn't even close to Vancouver's.

Yeah TO is like London Eng.

Full of immigrants, you can hardly find a White guy in the crowd.
Everybody is bringing their garbage with them when they come to TO.
