A man who poses as a cop is robbing elderly victims in downtown Ottawa.
Police say there have been at least six incidents between December 10 and 23 in which a man "led his victims to believe he was a police officer," according to a release issued Wednesday morning.
The man, who appeared to be in his 50s or 60s, approached elderly targets and identified himself verbally as a police officer or said things that would lead them to believe he was a cop. He was not in uniform.
The man stole money from the victims, then fled the area.
The incidents have occurred on Rideau St., between Cumberland St. and Charlotte St.
Police are asking the public for assistance in identifying the suspect, or to report suspicious incidents where someone identifies themselves or poses as a police officer and is unable to provide proper police identification.
The suspect is described as:

  • white male
  • 50 to 60 years of age
  • 6-feet tall
  • medium build
  • white wavy hair
  • often wears a “poor boy” hat
  • well dressed
  • speaks English
Anybody with information is asked to contact the Central District Investigators at 613-236-1222 extension 5166 or Crime Stoppers.

A man has been arrested after police allege someone was posing as a police officer and was involved in several robberies of elderly victims in downtown Ottawa.
Adrian McQuade, 66, of no fixed address was charged Wednesday with several offences that occurred between Dec. 10 and Dec. 23 on Rideau Street between Cumberland Street and Charlotte Street.
Police said several incidents occurred where a man claimed he was a police officer. He was not in uniform but would identify himself as an officer. Police allege the man then stole money from the victims and fled the area.
Ottawa Police’s central district investigations unit and the central division neighborhood office unit and demo/foot patrol unit charged McQuade with seven counts of false representation of a peace officer, two counts or robbery, two counts of theft not exceeding $5,000, one count of assault and one count of possession of stolen property.
He appeared in court Christmas Day.
Late Tuesday police had released surveillance video images of a man and had asked for the public’s help in identifying the suspect.
