PORT HOPE, Ont. - An elderly woman plunged Wednesday off a bridge known for welcoming home fallen soldiers.
The woman fell off the bridge over the Highway of Heroes at Cranberry Rd. in Port Hope, about 100 km east of Toronto. She landed in the westbound lanes of Hwy. 401.
Police believe the fall was accidental.
One witness, who had to swerve at the last second to avoid hitting the woman, said the woman was on the bridge taking pictures when she fell.
She was with her husband, who rushed down from the bridge to help her.
The witness said the woman was unconscious at first, then woke up screaming in pain.
The woman was airlifted to hospital for treatment of what police called serious injuries.
All lanes of Hwy. 401 westbound were closed for a short period but were reopened by 2:30 p.m.
The same overpass was packed with people last Friday, when the body of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo travelled along the Highway of Heroes in advance of his funeral.
