WELLAND, Ont. – A dead dog found in the Welland Canal with a brick tied to its legs may have been alive when it was thrown into the water.
A passerby made the grisly discovery Thursday afternoon and called the Humane Society.
“It's a totally horrific, sick act,” the society's executive director John Greer said. “Why anyone wouldn't just turn it in to the shelter... You just can't figure out what goes through someone's mind.”
He said the dog was found floating in about two metres of water, a red brick paving stone tied around its hind legs with a cable. The dog was an apricot-coloured male cockapoo-type breed and is believed to have been around six or seven years old. It had a choke collar on with a short leash but no tags or identifiers like a chip or tattoo.
There were signs of injury to the dog's mouth and eyes, and investigators aren't sure yet if it was dead before it was thrown into the water or if it drowned. It appears the dog had been in the water between 24 and 48 hours, Greer said.
The animal has been sent to the University of Guelph for a necropsy.
“We believe it was alive when it was thrown in,” he said.
Investigators have no leads yet on who owned the dog or who may have dumped it.
Anyone with information on who the dog may have belonged to or what happened is asked to call the humane society.
“The more people that call in, the better,” he said, adding that animal-related criminal charges could be laid if there's enough evidence.
