TORONTO - A “monster” who choked, raped and stomped on the head of an unconscious woman was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years in prison.
Nathan Bumesi’s violent crime was captured on surveillance video after he lured his 53-year-old victim behind a Regent Park building and attacked her.
“No member of the public should be treated like a piece of human garbage that she was turned into at the hands of Nathan Bumesi,” Justice Faye McWatt said.
Bumesi, 23, pleaded guilty to aggravated sexual assault in October. He expressed his remorse in an apology, has no prior convictions and comes from a supportive family with successful siblings, added McWatt.
His family said the incident was out of character for him.
“The person on that video is a monster,” said McWatt, who deducted almost three years off the sentence for time already served.
The victim spoke with Bumesi in the lobby of a building known for crack-dealing before being lured outside, court heard.
The victim tried to escape the fenced-in garbage area, but Bumesi dragged her back in the enclosed area. He punched, kicked and stomped her into unconsciousness and renewed the sexual violence, said McWatt.
“It was a diabolical crime and this is the worst case the judge said she has ever seen,” said Toronto Police Det. Mark Benallick. “I’m thrilled that the sentence reflects the degree of violence inflicted on an utterly defenceless, unconscious woman. It was a fitting sentence for a terrible crime.”
Crown attorney Mihael Cole said the victim was sexually violated in both conscious and unconscious states, and left to die naked after an attack that lasted several minutes.
She suffered injuries that required reconstructive surgery on her face, jaw and eye socket. Her collarbone was broken in three places, her skull was fractured and her shoulder suffered irreparable damage, said Cole.
McWatt said Bumesi tore off her clothes and hurled them over the fence and onto a balcony. He shooed away three sets of passersby so that he could continue his relentless, unprovoked assault.
Bumesi suffers from no major mental illness, but has had sleepwalking episodes. He should refrain from using alcohol or drugs, which he abused since his mid-teens and consumed earlier that night, court heard.

So, he gets a measly 10 years for a "diabolical" crime. What would he get if it was a "horrifying" crime. He'll be out when he's 33 years old, and probably will be performing more diabolical acts. What a joke. He should have gotten a longer sentence.

'Monster' rapist Nathan Bumesi added to DNA databank

TORONTO - Toronto Police say convicted rapist Nathan Bumesi may have committed more sex crimes than the horrific assault that landed him a 10-year prison sentence this week.
Surveillance video captured Bumesi when he lured a 53-year-old woman into a fenced-in garbage area behind a Regent Park building and brutally attacked his victim.
Det. Mark Benallick, of the sex crimes unit, said Wednesday “the nature of the offence, degree of violence and unprovoked nature” of the April 3, 2012 assault led him to conclude Bumesi may have attacked others.
Madam Justice Faye McWatt on Tuesday sentenced Bumesi, 23 — who pleaded guilty in October to aggravated sexual assault — to 10 years in prison less almost three years for time served.
She said the “person on that video is a monster” and ordered him to provide a DNA sample to the national databank.
Benallick said the newly-acquired sample may help solve other crimes.
“I’ve been in contact with the Windsor police (where Bumesi lived prior to returning home) and he will be checked for any unsolved crimes there,” said Benallick.
His victim suffered devastating injuries to her face, jaw, eye socket and collarbone. Her skull was cracked and her shoulder has suffered irreparable damage, court heard.
The victim suffers terrifying nightmares to this day.
Born in Nairobi, Kenya, Bumesi moved to Canada with his family when he was two years old and lived mostly in Toronto. When the Canadian citizen was 17, he moved in with his eldest brother, Peter Wanyenya, in Windsor after their parents split up.
He began smoking marijuana at age 16, initially on a daily basis, but curtailed his habit to once a week. He started drinking alcohol in his late teens and has had three “blackouts,” including one on the night he attacked the woman in Regent Park.
Bumesi doesn’t blame alcohol for his offence “but directly attributes his actions on that day to alcohol consumption,” a parole report stated.
A psychiatric assessment by Dr. Julian Gojer stated Bumesi has either “prominent anti-social and narcissistic traits or a personality disorder not otherwise specified,” which is marked by “deceitfulness, impulsivity, aggression and impaired remorse.”
Early stages of bipolar disorder and sexual sadism “cannot be definitively ruled out,” because of the “seemingly out-of-character nature” of the crimes, wrote Gojer.

Yep, placing him in the DNA bank is going to prevent him from doing anything else in the future.

I would dearly love to know why doing something like that only lands a guy 10 years.

Do I detect sarcasm?;)

Because the "justice" system in Canada is not there to help the victims, it is to be as soft as possible to the criminals.

Sarcasm, disgust, bewilderment. All of the above...
