Someone has unwittingly witnessed a murder and uses his cell to report the crime to the authorities. This person is told to stay where they are for the authorities will need their account of what was witnessed. Soon enough this person has given a written statement.
The authorities realizing the crime was mob related it is decided to put this person in the Witness Protection Programme.
Not long after the incident the witness has a new identity, a new job and is living in another city far from the scene of the crime.
While waiting to testify in the case he reads in the obituaries that his oldest and closet friend has died from natural causes. Now this person has an extremely difficult decision to make.

IMO: I would not jeopardize my safety.

Woof!

Quoting lone wolf
How are you going to get around your handler?

Woof!
lone,
A valid point, but premature. Our witness has yet to make a decision about what to do. Is the handler even aware of this person's predicament?

Actually in itself your point would become a new dilemma for this person.

....if the person does nothing your question is moot....if the person decides to act the problem of the handler comes into play....

Well the guy is dead. If you find you need to stand beside his lifeless lump of flesh to quell some need within your soul then what does it matter. The need is irrational so if you feel this need strongly enough well then why not die for it?

I agree with eh1eh. I didn't know what the "extremely difficult decision" was until I read more posts.

IMO leaving my best friend behind for a new identity means I have given him up forever anyway. He was already dead, not in fact but in relation to me.
