It is early August and you know that you will receive a notice of an increase in your rent.
Canada Post had deemed your town not worthy of personal home delivery of your mail so you must truck to the Post Office when you feel that it is necessary.
Once at the Post Office you go to your box which is # 296, open it and find a letter hand-written which you know concerns a rent increase.
You immediately open the envelope and find that it says that as a long time tenant and personal friend of the owner your rent will remain at $500.00/utilities included. You re-read the notice because you are presently paying $625.00/utilities included. This is puzzling to you and take another look at the P.O. Box number and it reads # 299.
You have been a tenant in this complex for over seven years, two years less than Box # 299. It is your understanding that utilities are pro-rated and spread evenly amongst the tenants.
Now you know that you live in the best and cheapest complex in town and wonder what you should do about what you consider favouritism toward another tenant because of their personal ties.
Do you advise the Postmaster that you, by mistake, received and opened the mail meant for another person or do you confront the landlord?
It is not your intent to move once the situation has been corrected, but do you take out your frustration with your landlord in a way that was not expected?

...I would be in the landlord's face

I would advise the Postmaster of the mistake and would realize the persone who's been there two years longer than me would have paid less to rent then - and caps on increases would keep his rent steadily lower than mine.

I would advise the postmaster, and try to remember that the landlord can charge what ever he wants. Bitching and then moving will not result in a better housing or financial situation, since you already live in the cheapest and best place in town. Keeping mind that the utilities may still be prorated and his rent could be what ever the difference was between the all inclusive 500.00 and the cost of utilities.

I would print up flyers for all the tenants with the details; you know, more fuel for the fire.
