Has Marmaduke ever been funny? Everytime I read it I get angry. The guy who draws this cartoon is making too much money for the garbage he produces. Yesterdays cartoon has Marmaduke barking at his owner who's in the shower, and the owner says "cable out again?" Is this funny? The dog is big and annoying. Thats supposed to be funny? One cartoon had the dog in shades and a police officer saying "he's part of a witness protection program". Is it funny because the dog is in shades or that he witnessed a murder. I hate that cartoon!

This is how Marmaduke should end. The last cartoon is Marmaduke taking a crap on the rug and the owner shooting him. That's it. Just as funny as all the other ones.
I remember one where the dog is running in the front door and he yells to his wife to open the back door. hahaha. the dogs so big and fast they better open the back door or he'll knock it down. funny. That cartoonist is earning his millions. (sarcasm)

There should be a Marmaduke carnage. He gets rabbis, kills Blondie and Dagwood, and then his owners hunt him down and put a bullet in his head. Makes me laugh.

Different strokes I guess. Just reading this post made me .

It's something a/b the visual, maybe his size and that fact that he looks kind of dopey; imagining him wearing shades just cracks me up. I don't read comics regularly including Marmaduke but if I happen to be reading them I definitely check out that one.

Todays cartoon? The owner is in the car pool lane and gets pulled over by the cop. In the back seat is the dog. The owner says "you didn't say you have to carpool with a human". Ahahahahahahaha. The dog thinks it's people!

You must have a funny way of telling it b/c I'm again literally lol! Or maybe the comedic powers of Marmaduke transcends. I'd put my $$ on you though. :D

Yep, I think you're right. Something a/b the degree of your disdain makes it funny on a whole other level. Perhaps that's also the brilliance of Marmaduke, the myriad of ways he's able to bring a/b laughter.

Of course I'm sure not everyone is as adept as you at bringing it to the fore so thanks!

The strip I'd like to see:

Marmaduke gets rabies, bites all those lame characters in the Family Circle strip, the Cathy strip, the Sally Forth strip, they all die painfully from it, Marmaduke gets put down by lethal injection, and Dogbert delivers a cruel and sarcastic eulogy ending with "They're all dead and we're all glad."

Marmaduke has been going for quite a while now - since maybe the late 60s or early 70s. Anyways I believe the appeal with him is that he is a big dopey dog who gets into a lot of silly adventures that people find funny (mainly Americans). Its kind of a tradition to keep him in the comic section (it seems) although I don't think hes really that funny or ever was.

RE: The comic stip Marmad

I like Dex's storyline, very dark :D
There sould be a sequel where Garfield gets what's comging to HIM, too, you think Marmaduke's bad, Garfield is pretty stink too... all's the writer does is put some panels of that stupid, stupid animal being dumb and fat, then caps it off with one panel with the thought "LASAGNA" and the dumb fat animal leaping onto said foodstuff and call's it a day... I thought I was hallucinating when the commercials for the MOVIE of that crap actually started airing, I guess the fact that it tanked restored a tiny tiny piece of my hope for the future, but the sequel made me wonder anew...

and even tho I liked Hagar as a kid, they should drop the "hagar the" part of the title and call it "Horrible" cos that what it is nowadays too...

I swear, the "funnies" are usually the FIRST place you can bet that nothing funny will actually appear, EVER, the "strips" of today are almost pavlovian (like the aforementioned garfield BS, substitute a bell with "lasagna" and salivating with laughter and you have the whole formula)

Funny topic Gonzo, very good, and I do know exactly where you're at with it- please keep transcribing the cartoons when the mood strikes...

There's a local radio host who sometimes does the "funnies" like this, just reads 'em out and describes the bits and puts in the most RIDICULOUS canned laughter... I think that might be the key, the funnies now require a LOT of work to laugh at

And most of us thought we were suffering from a personality disorder that blocked our ability to see the humour in these comics. I now feel sane and can come out of the closet and announce 'this is not funny'.

Most humour has a shelf life. Mayber a year or two. When I was a kid we were subjected to 'Wayne and Shuster' specials a couple times a year. I sat on the floor and endured a dozen of these waiting for something to be funny but it never was....just stupidity that was 'supposed' to be funny when the laugh track was inserted.

Sometimes humour fails but at least the director is trying to be creative. I've watched Monty Python episodes and be about ready to pee myself wih laughter whereas I've watched other episodes of the same and it's a big 'huh?' until I snooze off.

Maybe being raised on the 3 Stooges sets the mark and it's a struggle for anything else to reach such classy heights of humour as the wit of Curly, Moe and Larry.

I think some humor is timeless. The old Bugs Bunny cartoons are still funny today. Monty Pythons movies are hilarious. The argument clinic sketch is a classic that would make anyone laugh. Plus, no matter how old you get, the sound of a fart will still make you laugh well into your golden years.
Some humor is only funny during it's time. I guess Jackie Gleason thought it was funny to threaten to punch his wife but today that doesn't get a chukle out of me. Kind of makes me cringe.
But I just cant see how Marmaduke could ever be funny. I dont think he's even trying anymore.
