A TV psychic has been called out to banish a poltergeist terrorising a family.

Former Most Haunted medium Derek Acorah was called out to a house in Coventry after bizarre occurrences eventually caused the family to flee in terror.

Lisa Manning, 34, and her children Ellie, 11, and Jaydon, six, claim that pots and pans were flung around, lights switched on and off, cutlery flew out of drawers and window blinds moved up and down by themselves.

Last October they found their pet dog lying dead at the foot of the stairs and a vet told them it was if it had been thrown down them.

Eventually they called in a priest to exorcise the spirit, and he told them to wear crucifixes. The exorcism didn't work.

Miss Manning also decided to set up video cameras to record the strange occurrences, and filmed a pink chair sliding across the floor in Ellie's bedroom and her wardrobe door opening by itself.

Scouser Acorah was eventually brought in and 'cleansed' the area, telling the family he had 'closed the door' that the ghost was using to terrorise them.

He said that the strange goings on were caused by a man called Jim who died in 1900.

Now Miss Manning says their home feels like a different place. She is even withdrawing her request to move from the rented Whitefriars property - as long as there are no more spooky goings on.

However, studies into the poltergeist phenomenon show that, rather than being the spirits of dead people, they are actually seemingly caused by psychic energy emanating from a particular person - a focus - and that this person is usually a child.

TV 'ghostbuster' Derek Acorah has stepped in to help a spooked family who claim their house is haunted by a poltergeist.

The former star of the Most Haunted show claims to have banished the ghost called Jim, which apparently moved a chair across a bedroom.

Lisa Manning, 34, and her children Ellie, 11, Jaydon, six, had fled their house in Holbrooks, Coventry, in terror several times because of bizarre events at the property.

Who dunnit? Miss Manning said a poltergeist threw cutlery on the floor

Pots and pans were thrown around the kitchen, window blinds moved up and down by themselves, lights switched on and off and drawers opened.

They were even forced to climb out of a window after being trapped in their living room when the door locked by itself.

Miss Manning was initially sceptical when her partner Anthony Powell complained that something strange was going on.

But she changed her mind when their pet dog was mysteriously killed last October after apparently being shoved down the stairs when no one was in the house.

A priest advised them to wear crucifixes after a video camera recorded a chair moving by itself in Ellie's bedroom.

Acorah has now investigated and suggested an angry spirit was drawn to the little girl, because her room was the subject of the most scary attacks.

'A poltergeist will often feel an attraction to a child,' the 61-year-old expert told The Sun.

The psychic lit three candles and put them on the floor in the bedroom, with his set of crystals on the windowsill.

Then, with his eyes closed, he described the ghost as Jim, a 'very, very angry man' who had died in around 1900 but never passed into the spirit world.

Scary: The chair continues to move across the room all by itself

Acorah 'cleansed' the area, telling the family he had 'closed the door' that the ghost was using to terrorise them.

'Derek Acorah confirmed everything. He knew so much about what has been happening,' she said.

He cleansed the house and he said nothing should come back.

'He even knew how the dog died. He said he felt the presence of the man who was here and that he had hurt the dog. It was so emotional. He knew what I was saying was true, but it was still nice to hear it from him.'
