Tough call when you own stock in both BHP, PCS, and are a SK resident.

Oh yeah...if PCS was still a Crown...

I'm still pissed and it's been 20 some years.

If the Feds approve the sale, will Saskatchewan's Conservative MPs pay a political price? What price sovereignty? Perhaps Wall needs those F-35s?

The feds have no sane choice other than block it when it means world domination by one corporation of the entire potash market. They could price fix right from the start and keep gobbling up the competition.

Wrong thread but that's okay.

They already stole the polar bear theme for their diamonds.

Holy ****! What if they build a giant mechanical kangaroo or emu?

I wonder if anyone remembers that PotashCorp was once 100% Canadian owned. There would be no controversy over the takeover if once again a right wing government had not sold one of Canada's most important resources off to the highest bidder. Of course, BHP's takeover bid is not in Canada's interest. It was never in Canada's interest to allow foreigners to own the resource in the first place.

It used to be that profits from the Saskatchewan potash corp. kept Saskatchewan taxes down.

Then in the 80's someone conned Saskatchewanians into letting a few people take it over so only that few people got the profits, such that everyone else's taxes went up to keep services running.

Because people didn't want their taxes to go up, that led to cutting of services. The few owners of the potash corp got richer, and options for everyone else were to pay more taxes, or lose services.

Civilization is measured by the quality of services, so civilization went down, and a few people got richer in order to rule like they used to back in the Macedonian ages.

It's just an old-fashioned takeover of the power from the people into the hands of a few, similar to how the first empires were hammered out from the small villages living up and down the Tigris, Euphrates, and Nile by a few empire builders.

The thing that gets me is... what's their thrill? Were they molested as children?

We can build virtual-reality tanks for people who want to take over the world to plug into and experience the phenomena subjectively. They just plug in for awhile, get to experience the subjective experience of taking over the world, and get satisfied without actually hurting anyone.

Virtual-reality tanks like that are not imagination, because the US Army is starting to use them to get guys to relive the experiences that threw them into PTSD in order for them to relive it enough times to get over it. (Turns out it's possible to get over PTSD if you can relive it enough time to not be shocked by the memory recall).

Funny enough Australia has had similiar deal that the Govt rejected on the same grounds - They may sue and win, though I think they will not sue nor would they win but the Govt can put so many conditions on it that it would not be feasible -

Potash is a SASK Resource - BHP wants to mine - Nothing states the Govt has to sell rights to dig now does it?

They can approve or reject application to access the resource.

Translation - They can squeeze them hard then twist their nuts by denying permits. Do you think that suing is in BHP's best long term interests? I think not.

BHP is building their first SK potash mine as we speak and royalties structure already hashed out. BHP waited until after all that was settled before trying their take over bid.

And they will want to expand dramatically - Canada has 30% of the worlds reserves - Growing populations - poor soils - climate changes -
Potash is a long term and good investment.

I for one am extremely happy that they nixed the deal! Good for the Province of Saskatchewan!

take that! you don't come into Saskatchewan and expect to get away with that kind of swindle!

they may be the smallest province West of Ontario but they're not dumb!

I someone of the left persuation have to applaud the Federal Government today on
this one. I don't want to see anymore deals on our national resources and the time
has come for Canadians to understand we already have the things we need to
survive and grow. I am getting old, and I say Canada for Canadians.

Nice sentiment but I'm afraid it is a little late for that. Just about all our resources are owned by foreign interests. At one time we had publicly owned resources and utilities but subsequent governments have sold them off because some nut jobs kept screaming "SOCIALISM!"
